Acoustic Treatment vs Soundproofing

Treatment controls internal sound via absorbers and diffusers. Soundproofing blocks transmission via mass, decoupling, and sealing. These are fundamentally different disciplines solving opposite problems. Foam does not soundproof.

Treatment

Absorbers reduce RT60. Diffusers scatter reflections. Bass traps control modes. Goal: optimize internal character.

Soundproofing

Mass + decoupling + sealing. STC/Rw ratings. Foam provides zero isolation. Concrete isolates but needs treatment for good acoustics.

Measuring Treatment

RT60 before/after per ISO 3382. STI improvement for speech. Avoid over-treating below 0.2 s.

Measuring Isolation

DnT per ISO 16283 before/after. 10 dB improvement = perceived halving of transmitted noise.

Need Both?

Studios, theaters, broadcast. Isolation envelope first, then internal treatment. Independent but complementary systems.
