The 'Silent' Generator
The event planner had specifically requested a 'silent generator.' The rental company had delivered what they described as a 'super-silent, premium, whisper-quiet power unit.' The spec sheet said 55 dBA at 7 meters. It was positioned 10 meters from the VIP tent.
During the cocktail reception, the VIP guests — who had each paid two thousand dollars for the 'intimate acoustic experience' — were shouting over a persistent drone. I measured it at the nearest VIP table: 72 dBA. At the generator housing: 79 dBA.
The spec sheet wasn't lying, technically. The generator was rated at 55 dBA at 7 meters... at 50% load, measured at a specific angle, on a grass surface, with no reflective boundaries. The event was running it at 95% load, the exhaust faced the tent, and it sat on a concrete pad that reflected everything straight into the VIP area. Also, the 'super-silent housing' had a panel that the delivery crew had left unlatched.
We closed the panel. That brought it down to 68 dBA. We hung some moving blankets on a frame between the generator and the VIP area. That got us to 63 dBA. We moved the cocktail tables to the far end of the tent. The VIPs eventually settled at 58 dBA and declared the evening 'charming.'
The Moral: Manufacturer specs describe ideal conditions that never exist on site. Always verify with SonaVyx's SPL meter before the guests arrive — a five-minute measurement can save a very expensive evening.
